Maintenance Worker, Streets

Job Description

This position is a member of the Public Services Department – Streets Division and reports directly to the Lead/Operations Foreman.  All staff in the Public Services Department, whether directly or indirectly, are supervised by the Public Services Director. The Streets Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of labor intensive duties related to the construction, inspection, maintenance, and improvement of city streets. This is a safety sensitive position that requires a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL).


Job Responsibilities

Participates in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of the streets, storm drains, curbs, and gutters.
Performs heavy manual labor including digging, lifting, and breaking pavement under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, biological, electrical and mechanical traffic hazards.
Installs, repairs, paints, and maintains signage.
Performs heavy manual labor including digging and lifting.
Ensures maintenance materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner.
Establishes layout and sets up safety traffic controls around active work area.
Collects and disposes of street debris.
Plows snow, shovels sidewalks, and performs other winter hazard mitigation.
Maintains vegetation along city streets.
Sets up and operates a confined space entry tripod and safety harness and associated data recording.
Completes work in a professional manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
Operates heavy machinery, hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles, including commercial vehicles.
Maintains city vehicles and equipment.
Removes manhole covers, enters manholes and unclogs stopped storm drainage lines.
Assists other public services departments with tasks.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains accurate records and daily logs.
Inspects materials and workmanship to insure quality standards.
Expedites the flow of material and supplies to assigned job.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - • Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be computer literate with Microsoft Office familiarity.
• Must submit to and pass a drug screening test upon offer of employment.
• Must pass a motor vehicle record review and a driving evaluation upon offer of employment.
• Knowledge of and willingness to comply with all rules and regulations, including the Employee Handbook,
OSHA Standards, and the Confined Space Program.
• Knowledge of safety rules and equipment, including identification of, precautions for and emergency response to hazardous gases and vapors.
• Must have some understanding of general construction practices and be proficient with various hand tools.
• Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and communicate in English orally and in writing.
• Must be able to perform basic math such as addition and subtraction.
• Ability to work evening, night, weekend, standby shifts, and perform occasional overtime.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
• Demonstrate good workmanship in a neat and timely manner while maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
• Must be able to complete work in a professional manner utilizing accepted standards and practices.
• Ability to perform tasks and assist coworkers with minimal supervision.
• Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and to formulate work procedures within the limits of the position to accomplish assigned tasks.
Experience, Education, and Training - • Must have high school diploma or possess a GED.
• Must have a valid Class B or higher commercial driver’s license (CDL).
• At least two years’ experience in street maintenance or asphalt work preferred.
• Must obtain Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work under varying weather conditions while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, insects, noise, chemicals, and biological, electrical and mechanical traffic hazards.
• Physical strength and dexterity requirements include the ability to:
o Lift and carry 50 pounds of tools or construction materials
o Grasp, push, pull, handle, reach overhead, bend-over, balance, and climb
o Ability to traverse uneven, wet or broken terrains
o Ability to remove and replace metal manhole covers and grates weighing approximately 165 pounds
o Ability to perform constant lifting and stooping
o Ability to drag 100 feet of 3” fire hose full of water.
• Endurance and capacity to perform hard physical labor.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and climb in and out of manholes of various depths.
• Ability to operate various hand tools such as, but not limited to: jackhammer, pavement breaker, pick, shovel and various wrenches.
• Ability to operate various equipment such as, but not limited to: snow plows, air compressors, street sweeper, skid loaders, backhoe, track hoe, frontend loader and various types of pumps.
• Ability to work while wearing personal protective equipment such as: a self-contained breathing apparatus, steeltoed shoes, rain gear, hard hats, goggles, etc.
